How do I disable the pop-up notification?

Go to the "Settings" screen which can be found under "Private Messaging" in the "User Menu". Scroll down to underneath the inbox or compose screen. You can also get to your settings clicking here.

Scroll down to "More Settings" and remove the tick from the box next to "Show a popup when a new message arrives".
